Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve lies in western Nepal and covers mountain meadows, forest, and valleys across several districts. It is the country’s only protected area where licensed hunting is permitted, but its natural value extends beyond that distinction. Blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, serow, deer, and many mountain birds inhabit the reserve. Above the forest line, broad grazing grounds and marshy meadows shape the landscape; the words “dhor” and “patan” refer to these wetland and open pasture environments.

The reserve suits travellers interested in remote walking routes and mountain nature rather than developed viewpoints. Infrastructure is sparse, with accommodation centred on camping and local settlements. Nepal’s tourism board describes the walk from Baglung as taking about four days, so this should be planned as a self-contained multi-day trek with supplies and local support, not as a quick excursion from Pokhara.

Conditions vary by season: monsoon rains affect the trails, while winter can bring cold, wind, and snow; weather changes quickly at altitude. Confirm permits, access, and guide requirements with Nepal’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation before departure, since fees and rules can change. Keep away from wildlife, do not enter private grazing land without permission, and pack out all rubbish. Allow spare days and have a communication plan in case the route is delayed.
