Gingee Fort, also known as Senji Fort, is an extensive hilltop stronghold in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. Its defensive system links three fortified hills: Rajagiri, Krishnagiri and Chakkilidurg. Walls, gateways and watch points follow the rocky terrain, making the fort feel like a landscape of connected citadels rather than a single castle on a summit.

Rajagiri retains fort structures and several buildings within its walls, including the Ranganatha temple, granaries, a magazine, a treasury and an audience hall. Other sections of the defensive line can be seen at the foothills and on the neighbouring heights. The combination of stone fortifications, temple architecture, rocky slopes and wide views across the plain makes the complex rewarding for visitors interested in both history and architecture.

Expect uphill walking on uneven stone paths; sturdy shoes and drinking water are essential. Many stretches are exposed to the sun, so bring a hat and plan the climb for cooler hours. The complex covers a large area, and exploring more than one hill takes considerably longer than a brief stop near the entrance. Check current access arrangements and visitor rules with the Archaeological Survey of India or local authorities before travelling.
