A relict broadleaf forest on the northern slopes of the Alborz, stretching along the southern shore of the Caspian through Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan. The age of this forest ecosystem is put at tens of millions of years, and in 2019 the Iranian part was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage list. At Rudkhan the forest shows straight from the path, with a stream, mossy boulders and old trees along both banks.
