Peneleh Heritage Quarter

Peneleh is an old district in central Surabaya where the city is developing a route through historic neighbourhoods and associated heritage sites. At the riverside entrance to the area, a sign reads Kampung Wisata Heritage Peneleh, or Peneleh Heritage Tourism Village. It is a useful starting point for a walk, not a single museum with one entrance. Surabaya’s municipal sources describe Peneleh as one of the city’s old settlements and connect it with the river network of historic Surabaya. The Peneleh Heritage Track links several addresses and landmarks, including the HOS Tjokroaminoto House Museum, places associated with Sukarno’s childhood, old prayer buildings and other sites spread along residential streets. Plan the walk as a series of stops and check which places are open on the day you visit. Everyday neighbourhood life continues between the landmarks: homes, small shops and local services line the streets, and some lanes and footpaths are narrow. Respect private property and do not enter courtyards without permission. This photograph shows the illuminated heritage-route sign beside the water; it is easy to spot after dark, while the district’s buildings and architectural details are easier to explore in daylight.
