Bala Hissar Fortress

An ancient fortress on the south-eastern hill of Kabul, recorded since the 5th century. It was the seat of Afghan rulers and a stage of all three Anglo-Afghan wars. Today only ruined walls and gates remain, high above the city, with the rusting hulks of Soviet armoured carriers still lying beside them, silent witnesses to the last forty years.
