A seated Maitreya Buddha 71 metres high, cut into the rock of Mount Lingyun above the meeting of the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers. The monk Haitong began the work in 713 and it was finished only ninety years later. Hidden inside the statue is a system of drainage channels that carries rainwater away from the stone. A narrow stairway cut into the cliff leads down to the feet.
