Mahabodhi Temple Complex

Temple·Bodh Gaya·India

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex marks the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha attained enlightenment. Emperor Ashoka built the first temple here in the third century BCE; the present main brick temple dates to the fifth or sixth century CE. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The grounds include the main temple, the Vajrasana or Diamond Throne, the sacred Bodhi Tree and stupas added over many centuries. A central path links several places associated with the events that followed the Buddha’s enlightenment. The complex remains an active place of worship and Buddhist pilgrimage.
