Bodh Gaya in Bihar is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations. Tradition identifies it as the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. The town’s historic centre grew around the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, which includes the main brick temple, the sacred Bodhi Tree and the Vajrasana. Monasteries and temples built by Buddhist communities from many countries stand around the central complex. The historic sites can be explored on foot, while trips to Nalanda Mahavihara and other places in Bihar are usually made by road.
