The military history museum in Astana tells of the host of the nomads and of the army of Kazakhstan from Saka times to the present day. Bronze figures of warriors of different ages are ranged around the circular central hall, from a Saka horseman with a bow to a batyr in helmet and mail. The halls display armour, helmets, sabres, spears and shields, and beside them stand mannequins in the uniform of the Soviet and the Kazakh armies. One exhibit on its own is the reconstructed costume of the Golden Man from the Issyk burial mound, with golden scale armour, a red cloak and a tall pointed headdress. The museum stands in the military quarter on the left bank, not far from the ministry of defence.
