Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is a 16th-century brick fortress above the meeting of the Oka and Volga rivers, in the historic centre of Nizhny Novgorod. The grounds are free to enter. The wall walk and museum exhibitions require a ticket: entering through the gates does not include access to them.
Thirteen towers are linked by walls that descend the hillside. Dmitrievskaya Tower faces Minin and Pozharsky Square. A museum opened there in 1896, and the decorative upper section dates from the rebuilding for that opening.
Tainitskaya Tower overlooks the Strelka, where the two rivers meet. Ivanovskaya Tower has an exhibition about the militia of 1612. Some towers are closed inside, including Belaya Tower.
The full summer wall route is 2,113 metres long and includes viewpoints and museum exhibitions. Buy your ticket and enter before 15:00; after that, tickets are available only for the shorter evening route. The winter wall walk covers 900 metres from Dmitrievskaya to Chasovaya Tower, so a full circuit is unavailable. Confirm the route operating on your visit date when buying a ticket.
The wall has steep climbs and high steps. It is awkward with a pushchair or heavy luggage; visiting the free grounds does not require climbing onto the wall.
From Minin and Pozharsky Square, pass through the arch of Dmitrievskaya Tower: the ticket office is on the right. Another office is at Ivanovskaya Tower, by the entrance from National Unity Square. A free map is available at the tourist information centre near Dmitrievskaya Tower.
Checked on 25 October 2026: entry to the grounds is free; the adult summer museum route costs RUB 600 and the winter route RUB 400. Guided tours cost extra. The museum opens daily 10:00–20:00, with ticket offices closing at 19:00. The full summer circuit has the earlier 15:00 entry cutoff. Gate opening hours follow a separate schedule.
