The Tver merchant Afanasy Nikitin reached India in the early 1470s, almost thirty years before Vasco da Gama, and described the road in A Journey Beyond the Three Seas, the first Russian account of India. The monument was raised on the Volga embankment in 1955, the bronze figure standing on a round platform shaped as a landing stage whose prow is finished as a boat with a horse's head. The embankment along the left bank of the Volga carries the traveller's name.
