The main square of the city, the point where the pedestrian streets of the old centre converge. It is dominated by the Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre, built in 1932 to a design by Nikola Lazarov in a neoclassical vein with Neo-Baroque elements: a rusticated base, Ionic columns, sculptural groups on the pediment, pink rendered walls. The opera works in the same building, so the posters on the facade are usually double. The square is paved in red and grey tiles laid in concentric circles, plane trees are planted around the edges, and in summer cafe tables are set out. From here begins Knyaz Boris I Boulevard - the main shopping street, lined with houses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, running down to the Sea Garden. Varna was the Roman Odessos, and archaeology surfaces all over the centre: a couple of blocks away lie the excavated Roman baths, among the largest to survive in the Balkans.
