The Pryamskoy Ramp joins the lower town of Tobolsk with the kremlin on the hill. The paved road runs along the bottom of a deep ravine and is held on both sides by high retaining walls, whitewashed to match those of the kremlin. The walls were laid in the eighteenth century so that the loose slope would not slide onto the roadway, and the design is linked with the name of Semyon Remezov. From above the ramp is spanned by the arch of the Rentereya, the building of the former Siberian treasury. The wooden Sofiyskaya Staircase of more than two hundred steps climbs alongside it.
