North Ossetian Philharmonic (Lutheran Church)

Attraction·Vladikavkaz·Russia

The red-brick neo-Gothic building on Miller Street was put up in the 1860s for the Lutheran community of Vladikavkaz, made up of German colonists, officers and officials, of whom there were quite a few in the city in the second half of the 19th century. Its architectural language is recognisably consistent: pointed windows with white surrounds, buttresses, a crenellated parapet and a tall spire above the western facade. For the south of Russia such a building is a rarity, and it is usually presented as the most atypical monument in the city. In the Soviet years the parish was closed, and in 1944 the church was given over to the philharmonic, created on the basis of the republic's symphony orchestra. The hall turned out to have good acoustics, and the building has kept its musical function to this day. Inside there is an organ, and the interior preserves the former hall structure with its tall windows. Outside, the building is surrounded by a small park, from which it is easy to photograph in full from the corner.
