Hoi An grew out of the port town of Faifo, where Japanese, Chinese and European merchants converged from the 15th to the 19th century. The quarters by the Thu Bon River were barely touched by the war, so hundreds of yellow mud-brick shophouses with wooden facades, Chinese assembly halls and clan chapels have survived here. The old town has been on the World Heritage list since 1999. In the evening silk lanterns are lit in the streets and on the water, and boats move along the river releasing paper lamps. By day the tailors' workshops and the market are at work, and cars are barred from the historic quarters.
