Sozopol Old Town

Attraction·Sozopol·Bulgaria

The oldest town on the Bulgarian coast: Greeks from Miletus founded Apollonia Pontica here in the sixth century BC, and the site has not stood empty since. The old town occupies a small rocky peninsula enclosed by a fortress wall that has been partly rebuilt — it runs right along the cliff above the water, and the waves beat against the stone below it. Inside are narrow cobbled streets and houses of the Black Sea type from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: a stone ground floor, a wooden upper storey with an overhanging bay, clad in dark boards. Many have been adapted as guesthouses and taverns, but the conversions were done carefully and the quarter keeps its coherence. A story of its own are the gulls, which nest on the rocks beneath the wall and hang above the cliff at all hours. Sozopol is quieter and more intimate than neighbouring Nesebar, though in summer it too gets busy.
