St Catherine's Convent in Tver

The convent stands in the Zatverechye district where the Tvertsa flows into the Volga, and it is clearly visible from the city embankment. The stone church of the Great Martyr Catherine with its green dome was built between 1774 and 1786 on the site of a wooden one, while the belfry and the side chapels were added in the nineteenth century. A community of nuns was founded here only in 1996, and before that the church served an ordinary parish.
