The cathedral stands on Dormition Hill above the Western Dvina and can be seen from almost any point in the centre. The building went up between 1743 and 1777 as the church of a Basilian monastery, was blown up in 1936, and the cathedral standing today was rebuilt between 2000 and 2011. A broad flight of steps climbs to it from the embankment.
