The only stone kremlin in Siberia was built at the turn of the eighteenth century on the high bank of the Irtysh, when Tobolsk was the capital of the whole Siberian land. The walls with their towers, the merchant yard and the Rentereya treasury were raised to drawings by the cartographer and chronicler Semyon Remezov. Inside stand the Cathedral of St Sophia and the Dormition together with the bishops' buildings, now occupied by the museum reserve.
