Trolltunga, or the Troll’s Tongue, is a narrow rock ledge above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in Ullensvang municipality, within the Hardanger region of western Norway. The outcrop sits at about 1,180 metres above sea level and projects horizontally over the surrounding mountain landscape. Its distinctive shape has made it one of Norway’s best-known natural landmarks. Reaching it is a demanding high-mountain hike rather than a short roadside stop. The official route from the P2 parking area at Skjeggedal is about 27 kilometres round trip and usually takes 8–12 hours. Starting from P3 Mågelitopp shortens the walk, but the hike is still long and strenuous. The trail is marked, yet mountain weather can change quickly. Before setting out, check the forecast, trail conditions and seasonal access rules, and bring enough water, food, warm clothing and time for the return journey. Local operators recommend a guide during the winter season. The trailheads are reached via Tyssedal and Skjeggedal; shuttle buses from Odda operate according to the season. The route crosses high plateaus and overlooks Ringedalsvatnet, making the hike a substantial part of any visit to the area. Trolltunga is a place to plan around daylight and conditions, not an attraction to add casually to a driving itinerary.
