Tso Moriri is a large high-altitude lake on the Changthang plateau in the Rupshu region, southeast of Leh. At roughly 4,500 metres, it is surrounded by open hills and snow-covered peaks. The shoreline ranges from broad stony stretches to shallow wetlands, and the lake and its adjoining marshes are important for migratory birds. Korzok, a small settlement with a monastery on the western shore, is the main base for visiting the lake.
Tso Moriri forms part of a protected wetland and a Ramsar site. Visitors come for the scale of the landscape, mountain reflections, and birdlife rather than resort facilities. Nomadic herding communities use the surrounding land; keep a respectful distance, do not enter pastures without permission, and avoid disturbing livestock or wildlife. Most accommodation and food options are concentrated in Korzok and seasonal camps, with far fewer services than in Leh.
The drive from Leh takes much of a day and follows high mountain roads, with few fuel stops and unreliable mobile coverage. Allow time to acclimatise in Ladakh before travelling and avoid strenuous walks immediately after arrival. Permit requirements can apply in this border region, so confirm current rules with the local administration before departure, along with road and weather conditions. Do not camp at the water’s edge, and carry all rubbish back out.
