Wat Manorom, Luang Prabang

Wat Manorom is a Buddhist temple and monastery on Manomai Road, southwest of central Luang Prabang. It sits away from the peninsula’s main street, so visitors often come here separately from the central temple walk. The official Luang Prabang tourism site notes that many visitors overlook the complex, even though it preserves one of the country’s most significant religious treasures.

Its principal sacred object is a large Buddha statue, which the Luang Prabang tourism portal describes as the oldest known Buddha representation in the country. It is believed to have been created in 1378 and originally weighed about 12 tonnes. The statue was partly destroyed when the town was plundered in the late nineteenth century, and it suffered further damage during the Franco-Siamese conflict. When the monastery was rebuilt in 1972, new arms were made for the statue from cement, and the figure was enclosed for protection.

Wat Manorom remains a working monastery as well as a historic site. Its position on Manomai Road offers a quieter side of Luang Prabang beyond the busiest visitor route. The official tourism website recommends exploring the street, where small guesthouses and local businesses sit near the temple; Wat Manorom can be part of a separate walk through the southwest of town. Visitors should treat the grounds as an active religious place: dress modestly and avoid interrupting monks or worshippers.
