The Hami museum of local history occupies a round building with a wide overhanging roof and a row of turquoise columns, set on a spacious square beside the tombs of the Hami kings. The collection tells the story of the oasis on the eastern edge of Xinjiang and of its role on the Silk Road, from the Bronze Age to finds from ancient burial grounds, textiles, ceramics and household ware. A separate part of the display is given over to palaeontology, since the bones of dinosaurs and pterosaurs are found in the country around Hami. There is an ethnographic section as well, with Uyghur embroidery, musical instruments and costume. The building went up in the 2010s and has become a notable piece of city architecture in its own right.
