Javellana Building (Sarabia Optical)

The S. Javellana Building is a historic commercial property in Iloilo’s old business district, at the corner of J.M. Basa and Guanco streets. The city’s cultural property inventory lists it as Javellana Building (CBD 01-010), an immovable tangible cultural property and an integral part of the Old Business District. National Historical Commission of the Philippines Resolution No. 3 (2014) includes S. Javellana Building among the historic buildings on J.M. Basa Street and dates it to 1922. The year 1922 is inscribed on the round pediment. Sarabia Optical and neighbouring shop signs show how the historic frontage remains part of an active commercial street rather than a closed museum.

Look at the corner composition: a raised circular pediment marks the junction, while a long arcade of arches runs along both sides of the building. Balconies, cornices and the repeated openings can all be seen from the pavement. Together they give a sense of how early twentieth-century commercial blocks were designed in central Iloilo. The official inventory describes the building as a commercial establishment integral to the old business district. It lies within the protected Calle Real heritage zone, where the sequence of buildings and street facades is part of the area’s character.

The building fits naturally into a walking route through City Proper and the other historic properties along J.M. Basa Street. The city inventory gives its address as J.M. Basa corner Guanco Street, Barangay Maria Clara, Iloilo City. This is privately owned commercial property: view the architecture from the street, and treat any interior access as dependent on the shops operating there.
