Building of the Kazakh Agrarian University

The main building of the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University stands on Abay Avenue and remains one of the most conspicuous examples of the grand postwar architecture of Almaty. The facade is built around a tall portico, and above the cornice rises a sculptural group with the state coat of arms and flag. The university itself traces its history to the end of the 1920s, when an agricultural institute was opened in Alma-Ata. A wide paved square with a staircase leading straight onto the avenue is left before the building. Visitors are admitted inside only on university business, but the facade can be seen in full from the street.
