Description

Flores

Flores is a small island town at the edge of the Petén jungle, serving as a convenient base for visiting the Tikal archaeological site — home to some of the most spectacular pyramids of Maya civilization.

Wiki

The main gateway to Tikal — the largest Classic-era Maya ruins — with around 14,000 residents in the town proper, set on a tiny island in Lake Petén Itzá in northern Guatemala. Flores itself is a charming tourist town of pastel colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and lake views from every angle. Formerly Tayasal — the last independent Maya capital, which fell to the Spanish only in 1697 (more than 175 years after the Conquest!). The most convenient base for exploring the Petén region.

Top Sights

  • Tikal — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest and most visited Maya archaeological parks. Key pyramids: Temple IV (65 m, with views above the jungle canopy), Temple II, Temple of the Great Jaguar. Howler monkeys, toucans and jaguarundis live in the surrounding forest.
  • Tikal at Sunrise — the unmissable experience: climbing Temple IV at 5 a.m. to watch dawn break over a sea of treetops — the same panorama filmed for a famous scene in Star Wars IV.
  • Yaxhá — less crowded but beautiful Maya ruins 1.5 hours from Flores, with a pyramid overlooking a lagoon.
  • El Mirador — the largest Maya ruins (dating to around 1,000 BC, pre-Classic period), deep in the jungle and reachable only by a 5-day trek or helicopter.
  • Ceibal — ancient ruins featuring unique circular pyramids, about 3 hours away.
  • Uaxactún — ruins neighbouring Tikal, regarded as the finest Maya astronomical observatory.
  • San Andrés and San José — lakeside villages with old colonial architecture.
  • Semuc Champey — a series of turquoise natural pools in a canyon, 6 hours from Flores. Guatemala's top natural destination.
  • Río Dulce — a canyon river 4 hours away, with the 17th-century Fort San Felipe.
  • Laguna Petexbatún — a remote lagoon with ruins and an eco-lodge.
  • ARCAS Wildlife Rescue Centre — a rescue centre for parrots and monkeys on the lakeshore.

November–April is the dry season (22–30 °C) — ideal conditions. The rainy season (May–October) brings short, heavy downpours; trails turn slippery, but the jungle is at its most lush. Sunrise at Tikal is best November–March, when skies are clearest. Maya Day (21 December) is the biggest local celebration.
