Akkerman Fortress, also known as Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Fortress, stands on a rocky promontory above the Dniester estuary. Its stone defences developed between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries and guarded a convenient route between the river, the estuary and the Black Sea. The complex covers more than nine hectares; its irregular circuit includes towers, gates and several inner courtyards. At the centre of the defensive system was the citadel, the most strongly protected section, connected with the garrison and civil yards. A walk through the grounds reveals how the fortress separated port, residential and military areas. On the north, the walls approach the water; ditches historically protected the other sides. Do not stop at the central courtyard: individual towers and stretches of wall illustrate different phases of construction and later changes. Allow several hours for the visit, since the perimeter is long and exposed sections require walking in the sun. The fortress stands beside archaeological remains of ancient Tyra, making it possible to explore two layers of the city’s history in one trip. Check the museum’s current schedule and access to the towers before setting out, as visitor arrangements and open exhibitions can change.
