Description

Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi stands on the Dniester estuary in Odesa Oblast. The city developed on the site of ancient Tyra, a Greek settlement near the river mouth; archaeological remains of the ancient town lie beside its medieval fortifications. The main landmark is Akkerman Fortress, whose walls occupy a promontory above the estuary. The defensive complex took shape over several periods and includes a citadel, a number of courtyards, towers and an extensive circuit of walls. Its position by the water helps explain the town’s role as a trading and military point on routes between river and sea. Visitors can combine a tour of the fortress with a walk through the older quarters and an introduction to the archaeological history of Tyra. Allow several hours for the fortress: the grounds are extensive, and the courtyards and towers make its layout clearer than a quick look at the entrance. Check current museum opening arrangements and account for the distance from Odesa when planning a visit. Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi makes a rewarding day trip for travellers interested in ancient Black Sea history and military architecture.
