Antalya Archaeological Museum

A collection into which finds from the whole coast of Pamphylia and Lycia have been brought — above all from Perge, and also from Aspendos, Side and Xanthos. The museum opened in its present building in 1972; there are more than a dozen halls, and they are laid out chronologically: from the Palaeolithic and the finds from the Karain cave through the Bronze Age and Phrygian pottery to Roman times. The main hall is the gallery of emperors and gods from the theatre of Perge: marble statues of Aphrodite, Artemis, Tyche, Trajan and Hadrian stand in rows along the walls and give a rare chance to see the sculptural decoration of a single building as a complete set. Shown separately are Roman sarcophagi with reliefs on all four sides, among them the sarcophagus with the labours of Heracles, and a hall with fragments of the so-called Elmali treasure. There is also an ethnographic section with carpets, costume and household objects of Ottoman times. The building stands at the western edge of the city, next to the start of the Konyaalti seafront.
