The gardens sit in a bend of the Avon River, also called Ōtākaro, next to Hagley Park. Enter from Rolleston Avenue and follow the river on foot. The route takes in the rose garden, conservatories and collections of New Zealand plants. Pick up a map at the visitor centre and ask what’s in bloom.
Entry to the gardens is free. Christchurch City Council lists opening at 07:00, with closing at 21:00 from November to February, 20:30 in March and October, and 18:30 from April to September. The open conservatories can be visited from 10:00 to 16:00. Cuningham House is closed for restoration. Part of its tropical collection is on display in Townend House. For a late visit, plan to use the outdoor paths. Hours and entry checked on 3 November 2026.
