Segara Anak is a high-altitude volcanic lake inside the Rinjani caldera on the island of Lombok. Its name is commonly translated as “Child of the Sea”; the broad blue-green water can look like an inland sea enclosed by steep mountain walls. The lake lies at roughly 2,000 metres above sea level in the western part of the caldera. A volcanic cone called Barujari rises from the lake. It is a younger active volcano, and its lava and ash deposits have changed parts of the shoreline over time. The view brings together the lake, the immense caldera rim and an active volcanic landscape in one place.

Segara Anak is protected within Mount Rinjani National Park. Forested slopes, open ridges and the caldera walls surround the water, while hot springs reflect geothermal activity in the area. Trekkers use the lakeside as a place to rest or camp on longer routes. The lake also has spiritual importance for communities on Lombok, and traditional ceremonies may take place in the area. The wider Rinjani-Lombok landscape is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised for its volcanic geology and natural heritage.

There is no road to the lake. Visitors reach it on foot along the national park’s mountain trails, including routes approached from Senaru, Sembalun or Torean. Descending into the caldera and climbing back out take time and require suitable fitness and equipment. Weather, trail maintenance and volcanic conditions can affect access, so registration, route availability and park rules should be checked with the park authority before setting out. Stay on authorised trails, keep clear of restricted areas around Barujari and carry all rubbish back out.
