Diu Fort occupies a headland beside the harbour, with its walls facing the sea. Its construction followed a 1535 agreement between Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, and the Portuguese. The fort was strengthened and altered in later years, and Portuguese rule over the island ended in 1961. Long ramparts, bastions, loopholes and towers show how the coastal terrain was used to defend the harbour and maritime routes. Within the complex are defensive platforms, old casemates and artillery positions; higher sections look across the channel toward the small fortress of Panikotha in the bay. A walking route can link the ramparts with the lighthouse and the town’s older churches, though the fort grounds themselves deserve several hours. Some areas are exposed to sun and wind, so a morning or late-afternoon visit is more comfortable in hot months. The masonry and bastions make the layered history of Diu visible: local rule from Gujarat, the Portuguese presence and modern Indian administration. Check access arrangements for individual structures before travelling, as conditions can vary across the site. The fort is the town’s central historic monument, and it also helps explain why the island mattered for the defence of India’s western coast.
