Kien Trung Palace

Attraction·Хюэ·Vietnam

Kien Trung is a palace in the Forbidden Purple City of the imperial citadel of Hue, the last residence of the rulers of the Nguyen dynasty. It was built in 1921-1923 under Emperor Khai Dinh, joining the Vietnamese palace tradition with European forms: colonnades, balustrades and mouldings sit here alongside dragons and the ridge finials of tiled roofs. In 1947 the building was destroyed during the war, and for almost eighty years an empty foundation remained on its site. A large-scale reconstruction was completed by the beginning of 2024, and the palace was opened to visitors. The facade is covered with mosaic of broken porcelain and coloured glass, and bronze vats and ceramic dragons stand by the main staircase.
