Victoria Harbour

Victoria Harbour separates Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon Peninsula and remains the main reason the city is built up so densely. The deep-water strait made Hong Kong a transshipment port back in the middle of the 19th century, and today its shores are taken up by the skyscrapers of the Wan Chai and Central business districts. The best vantage point is the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront on the Kowloon side, from where the whole line of high-rises comes into view. Every evening at eight o'clock the laser show A Symphony of Lights is switched on above the harbour, and the buildings are lit in time with the music. Green and white Star Ferry boats and junks with scarlet sails still cross the water.
