The chief shrine of Mazar-i-Sharif, where Afghan tradition holds that Caliph Ali ibn Abu Talib is buried. The present building was raised in the 1480s by the Timurid ruler Husayn Bayqara, and the city itself grew up around the mausoleum. The walls and domes are covered from top to bottom in turquoise and blue tiles, and a broad marble square lies in front of the mosque.
