Moon Hill stands about eight kilometres south of Yangshuo and is known for the arch that pierces it near the summit. The vault, some fifty metres across, was formed when the roof of an ancient karst cave collapsed, and as one walks around the hill the opening seems now a full moon, now a narrow crescent. A stone stair of about eight hundred steps leads up to the arch, and from the platform there is a view over the valley of the Yulong river and the ranks of karst peaks. The sheer walls around the arch have been used by climbers since the 1990s, with several dozen routes put up here, and the place counts as one of the leading crags in China.
