Merchant Yard of the Tobolsk Kremlin

The stone trading yard built at the beginning of the eighteenth century to a design by Semyon Remezov is a closed square with towers at the corners and an inner court to which merchants from Bukhara and China once came. The building was conceived as fortress and warehouse at once, so blank walls face outwards while all the doors and windows of the shops open onto the court.
