The walled residence of the Nguyen dynasty inside the citadel of Hue, laid down in 1804 under emperor Gia Long. Within it stood one more belt of walls, the Forbidden Purple City, into which only the emperor and his court were admitted. In 1947 and 1968 the complex was badly damaged and about a third of its more than one hundred buildings survived; since 1993 it has been on the World Heritage list and is gradually being restored.
