Kul Sharif Mosque

The main mosque of Kazan was built in the kremlin between 1996 and 2005 on the site of a many-minareted mosque destroyed when the city was taken by the troops of Ivan the Terrible in 1552. It is named after the sayyid Kul Sharif, who died defending Kazan. The turquoise domes and minarets are visible from the Volga bridges, and a museum of Islamic culture works on the lower floor.
