Mount Kailash is a sacred mountain in western Tibet, revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon tradition. Pilgrims undertake the kora, a high-altitude circuit around the mountain; its direction and meaning differ among religious traditions. The summit remains unclimbed, and climbing is prohibited and incompatible with the spiritual status of the site. The surrounding plateau is open and rocky, with severe weather; nearby are sacred Lake Manasarovar and settlements along the pilgrimage route.

The kora usually takes several days at high elevation, where cold, wind, and thin air make the route demanding even for fit travellers. It is not a casual walk. Gradual acclimatisation, sturdy footwear, warm clothing, and an honest assessment of health and fitness are essential. Some pilgrims use pack animals or local support on parts of the route, but availability depends on the season and local arrangements.

Kailash lies in a remote part of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Foreign visitors need special permits and an organised itinerary; entry rules and access can change, so confirm arrangements with a licensed operator and relevant authorities before travelling. Check the schedule, transport, altitude profile, and medical risks in advance. During the kora, follow local customs, stay on permitted paths, and carry all rubbish out.
