The Quang Ninh Provincial Museum occupies a black glass cube on the Ha Long waterfront, built to a design by the Spanish architect Salvador Perez Arroyo. The colour of the facade was chosen in memory of the coal on which the economy of the province rests, and by day the mirrored walls reflect the bay with its rocks and the sky. Inside there are three levels: the nature of the gulf with stuffed sea animals and the skeleton of a whale, the history of the region from ancient camps to the Vietnamese dynasties, and finally a hall on the mining trade. A separate part of the display is given to the mountain peoples of the north, with gongs, drums, stringed instruments and wooden models of cult buildings. The building stands away from the tourist piers, and on weekdays there are few visitors.
