The National Gallery of Canada is an art museum on Sussex Drive in Ottawa. Founded in 1880, it holds Canadian and European art, Indigenous works, sculpture and photography.

What to see

Louise Bourgeois's huge bronze spider, Maman, stands outside the entrance. Inside, choose a few sections rather than trying to see every gallery at once. Canadian paintings include works by the Group of Seven; other collections cover historical and contemporary Indigenous art and European art. Displays change, so an artist being represented in the collection does not guarantee that a particular painting is on view.

The Rideau Street Chapel is an unusual part of the museum: its historic interior was dismantled and rebuilt inside the Gallery after the original building faced demolition.

Tickets and free Thursday evenings

Regular admission is paid. Admission is free on Thursdays from 17:00 to 20:00. Free admission hours were checked on 28 October 2026. For another day, check the price for your ticket category when booking.

Planning your visit

The address is 380 Sussex Drive. The Gallery closes on Mondays during the winter season; check opening times for your date. Bags and umbrellas can be left in the cloakroom free of charge.
