
The museum opened in 1895 and grew out of the collection of the Kazan antiquarian Andrei Likhachov. It occupies the merchant yard on Kremlyovskaya Street right by the kremlin walls, one of the oldest civic buildings in the city. The display runs from the Stone Age and Volga Bulgaria to the twentieth century and takes in archaeology, weapons, manuscripts and recreated domestic interiors.
