The porcelain pagoda of the Bao'en Temple was counted one of the wonders of the medieval world: the nine-tiered tower in glazed facing was built in the fifteenth century by order of the Yongle emperor. European travellers described it as the most beautiful structure in China, and it was destroyed during the Taiping rebellion in 1856. On the site of the excavated foundations a museum park was opened in 2015, where a light pagoda of glass and steel with the same proportions was set above the underground crypt. Inside it is kept a reliquary with a fragment of relics found during the digs. From the Qinhuai embankment the new tower shows above the treetops and is reflected in the water.
