Monument to Abai in Almaty

The monument to Abai Kunanbayev stands on the square before the Palace of the Republic, where Abay Avenue comes out onto Dostyk Avenue. The bronze figure of the poet on a granite pedestal was unveiled in 1960, the work of the sculptor Khakim Nauryzbayev. The square with fountains around the monument has long served as a place for meetings, concerts and city holidays. Behind it rises the Palace of the Republic with its characteristic wide canopy, and beyond that in clear weather the ridges of the Trans-Ili Alatau are visible. The climb along Dostyk towards Kok-Tobe begins from this point.
