Alun-Alun Tugu Square

Alun-Alun Tugu is a historic circular square in Malang, in front of City Hall. It is also known as Alun-Alun Bunder: paths and garden beds form rings around a central monument set within water. The square brings together the city’s civic history and everyday movement through the centre, with City Hall, Jalan Tugu and other historic buildings nearby. Paths, flower beds and trees surround a pond of water plants at the heart of the grounds. After dark, lighting changes the atmosphere and draws attention to the architecture of the municipal building. Malang’s city government lists Alun-Alun Tugu among its historic places and connects it with the city’s identity as a garden city. The square fits easily into a walk that also takes in Kota Baru railway station and nearby heritage buildings. It is an open public space beside active roads, so visitors should use pedestrian routes and take care around traffic. The monument at the centre is associated with Indonesia’s independence history, while the circular layout gives it a clear place in the cityscape. This is not a standalone museum but a garden and public square where residents relax, meet and pass through the centre on their way about town.
