This is the only surviving tower of the Vyazma fortress, which was built in the 1630s under Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich to guard the western frontier. Of the six stone towers a single one is left, squat, with a base that widens sharply towards the ground and a wooden tented roof. It stands by the walls of the Arkadyevsky Monastery on the edge of the old town.
