Su Tong Pae Bridge

Attraction·Mae Hong Son·Thailand

Su Tong Pae is a bamboo footbridge in Mae Hong Son Province, crossing rice fields and the Mae Sa Nga River between Ban Kung Mai Sak and Tham Phu Sama Monastery. The crossing is about 500 metres long. Local residents and monks use it to travel between the village and the temple, making the bridge part of a working rural route rather than a purely decorative structure.

Villagers, monks and novices built the bridge together in 2012. The walkway uses bamboo and locally available materials; residents also donated old house and fence posts for its supports. The Shan name Su Tong Pae is commonly translated as “successful prayer” and recalls the community’s wish to complete a crossing through the fields. Along the route, visitors can see rice plots, water channels, small huts and wooded hills. Near the temple, the walkway rises above the green fields and gives a broad view across the valley.

Su Tong Pae is a short trip from Mae Hong Son and fits easily into a drive to villages north of town. The walkway is narrow and can be uneven, so shoes with good grip help; give way to local people using it as part of their daily route. Fields may be flooded after rain and bamboo structures change over time, so check locally that the bridge is open before setting out.
