Wat Kandal

Wat Kandal stands in the centre of Battambang, a block from the embankment of the Sangke River. Its main hall is raised on a high plinth and enclosed by a white balustrade, and the gabled roof is assembled in several tiers and finished with gilded nagas along the ridges. The walls between the columns are painted with scenes from the life of the Buddha, and figures of disciples with alms bowls stand on either side of the entrance. Stupas of varying height crowd the courtyard, holding the ashes of townspeople whose families supported the monastery. The community is active, monks study here, and the courtyard is open to visitors during daylight hours.
