The eastern gate of Ichan-Kala was built in 1806 under Muhammad Rahim Khan, and its name translates as the gate of the strong men. This is no simple passage but a long covered corridor under domes, with shops running along its sides, while a slave market was held beside the gate until the end of the nineteenth century. Through it the road led to Urgench and on into the steppe.
